Pirate pants complete! I'm sewing and I'm happy!

I'm working on pirate costumes for myself and for Daughter for Halloween and I'm on fire.

I'm not a super seamstress, but I can get the job done if the instructions are clear. My methods might be laughed at by a professional but I enjoy what I do and I've made some pretty awesome things, I have to say. Ichiban Son got a kick-ass Green Power Ranger costume for kindergarten that took me probably 60 hours to make but it was totally worth it - I impressed myself and everyone else who saw it. Daughter got a harem costume one year, and a gypsy/pirate queen costume the next.

Another of my favorites is a kilt I made from red bandannas; it was for a party with a scottish/cowby theme. I went online to look at kilt patterns and then just made it up as I went along. It was awesome, the pleats were f*ing amazing, but no one else was as excited about it as I was. haha. They sucked.

Sewing was something my mom passed on to me by example. I remember her sewing when I was a kid, although I couldn't tell you what she sewed (probably really simple things). I loved the sound of her machine and I loved watching her engaged in the task. In middle school everyone had to take a semester of sewing so I picked up a few skills there. I still have the laundry bag and tool belt/apron that I made. :) High school brought another sewing class where I picked up the rest of what I know; I made a skirt in that class but I don't think I ever wore it. It felt weird wearing it, like I was poor or something. Whatever. I often convince myself that with a formal sewing education I could have made it to the big time on Project Runway. You may laugh, but not in front of me.

Sewing is fun and relaxing and you usually get something freaking cool at the end of it all, not to mention making the kidlets happy. I even got Al to sew, he made a hooded cape sort of like a monk's robe. I'm not sure he loved it as much as I did and it was rather frustrating for him, but he stuck through to the end.

So fellow bloggers, don't be afraid to pick up that needle and thread!!

You're such a rad mom. My hand-eye coordination skills are basically zero, so I am truly terrible at things like sewing.
I bet you'd sew some amazing things. Have you ever tried it? Or maybe you really wouldn't like it, it's not as quick as coloring your hair. lol

Yeah, lack of hand-eye coordination, lack of visual art ability, and lack of patience of long-term projects cuts me right out of the sewing circle, unfortunately. :) I'll leave those masterpieces to you, ha!
