A gift for you
~E~
What are the one or two things you have given as a gift that made you feel really good?
My little brother and I used to watch David Letterman every single night, so I had the brilliant idea of giving him a "Paul Schaefer Kit". I included an electronic keyboard, a wireless microphone and a bald-head wig. I thought it rocked. I had a great time figuring out what to put in it, and drawing the packaging. He wasn't quite so impressed. He claims he just didn't get it. Whatevs.
Although I guess the point is to make the recipient happy.
My dad used to talk about a book he read and loved as a kid, called "Shaun, A Boy From Ireland". He had incredibly fond memories of it. While browsing a used book store one fine sunny day, I decided to look in the kids section (alright, I used to look for it whenever I went into a used book store) and ohmygod they had it!! I bought it, I swear I was shaking, I went home, and asked my dad "was that book you liked called Shaun, A Boy From Ireland?" He replied in the affirmative, so I pulled it out of the bag and placed it in his hands. He was speechless, and tears welled up in his eyes. Popster never said much, but I think that gift meant something to him.
Please share your stories, I would love to hear them. They don't have to be tearjerkers, I promise.

My sister loved it, and it felt so amazing to give it to her, and to have all our friends and family pass it around and look at it.
But wait, there's more. Ever since I was a child, my mother was coo-coo for unicorns. I remember buying her the first one, a gold-rimmed ceramic bell. She was in tears when I gave her that.
This year, however, I wanted to something extra-special, so I bought her an entire dish set with a unicorn decoration. All sizes of plates, bowls, serving dishes and silverwear. It was a stack of boxes that stood about six feet tall.
In hindsight, it probably wasn't very nice of me. She was completely overwhelmed and just shook and cried in my arms for about 5 minutes.
She's no longer as coo-coo for unicorns as she once was, and has given away a good portion of her collection. She still has most of those dishes, however, and continues to use them to this day, especially when I come to visit. :-)
Your blog regarding the perfect gift ever given has haunted me. I love finding the perfect present for people and have been fairly successful at it over the years. For example, my well-off…OK rich sister and brother-in-law thought the plane ticket/passport holders I sent them were so thoughtful. Probably the best gift I ever gave was a fancy cosmetic line sparkly eyeshadow liner pencil. This occurred way back in early high school, when my best friend was very, very depressed. She loved fancy clothes and always was well made up. It was just her. At the time, I didn't have squat for money…no allowance, no job, no trust fund, no generous cash gifts. In other words, I didn't even buy makeup for myself. But my friend was so, so down that she was crying while we were at the mall. I had remembered her looking at that eyeliner stick the last time we were at the mall, so I quickly ran and got it. The gift wasn't what was important. What was important was that there was someone to give her that gift, if you know what I mean. Sometimes all we have to hold on to are very, very little things.
