An anatomy lesson

~E~

I was reading another blog a month or so ago -I can't even remember the topic now- but I was shocked by the comments. A number of women discussed how they, or their little sister, or their friend, had no idea that women have three openings in their reproductive/elimination systems. These were women from age 13 to their twenties! They had heard women comment that they had to remove their tampon before they urinated so they wouldn't pee on the tampon. I, dear friends, am here to educate.

Here's a link to a diagram of the external female reproductive system. Don't be grossed out. We all own one. At the top is the clitoris; just under that is the urethral opening. Next are the labia, which sort of surround the vagina. Then waaaaaaaay back is the anus. We pee from our urethra; we menstruate from our vagina, and we poo from our anus. Cleared up?
:)

To any men reading, a few words about menstruation; if you have or plan to have a relationship with a woman you will have to deal with menstruation at some point. Don't get all squicked out about it. It's perfectly normal, almost every woman has her period, and it's disheartening for the man in your life to make a huge disgusting deal about it. You won't turn into a girl if you happen to touch a box of tampons.

A period comes generally every 28-32 days and lasts 3-5 days. Women vary a LOT, so your mileage may vary. I've gotten the impression that some men think a period lasts a few hours, an afternoon, and involves very little discharge. Not the case.

Even if you're not straight and won't be having an intimate relationship with a woman, you probably do have women in your life and you may even have a daughter some day. Knowing what menstruation is is a good thing.

I was rather surprised (to put it mildly) when you showed me that blog post. I found it sad that so many women were oblivious of their own anatomy. I wonder why that is? Societal oppression? The belief that our reproductive organs are "naughty parts" and should not be thought of AT ALL? Mass ignorance and/or apathy?

I find it personally hilarious to watch men's reactions at the simple mention of the word "tampon". Half the time you can actually see them wince! Geeze, guys, get over it!
Yes, I agree with the spud. Real men can deal with a woman's period and can even refrain from making ridiculously insensitive, childish, and uneducated remarks about it. A real man can recognize it for what it is, a part of reality and nature and a fact of life.

Women don't know about their anatomy because they don't teach it at school or they teach it at school but everyone is embarrassed and giggles and passes notes instead of paying attention. And then because society puts so much emphasis on a woman having a "perfect body" which is someone's skewed opinion of what perfect is, women forget to pay attention to important things, like how many holes they have in their nether regions. Except for those of us that do, pay attention that is. And we learn about it either by actually paying attention in school or reading books about it. And that is that.

My opinion, that is.
