Websites not to browse at work - warning, may be offensive

~E~

Lunchtime, time to eat and surf a bit. I was mindlessly scanning this blog today, where the discussion was about Jane F0nda saying the word c*nt on the Today Show or something. (She was discussing the Vagina Monolouges) It didn't click at first that I maybe should exit that webpage until I came upon this comment:

"like Dana says, the mere presence of the word triggers those porn filters and all hell could break through at work, so we gotta not have ‘em around."

That was after reading comments like this:

c*nt c*nt c*nt c*ntyrama - heh I’m so offensive!

Eek.

What do you think of the word? Much of the time I'm not particularly bothered by it. I happen to have one and frankly I like it. It took some time to reach this point though.
It's also pretty funny/ironic that guys who spend half their time looking at lady bits in p0rn or trying to get access to one seem to think it's such a disgusting thing to call someone. There seems to be a bit of a cognitive dissonance there. Either it's the best thing that can happen to you or it's just ew; make up your mind.

Ever notice how many insults are based on being female? It's the lowest of the low as a man to be considered feminine in any way. Somehow it's still supposed to be insulting to call a woman female-based nasties. That seems a bit redundant.

What new and appropriate insults can we come up with?

I think one of the reasons that it is considered offensive to call a woman a c*nt is because you are reducing her to one part of her anatomy (a part of the anatomy considered "dirty" by some). Hence other invectives such as ass, dick, prick, chode, pussy, butthole, etc.

One interesting thing about c*nt is that it seems to me to be more of a British swear word than American. I hear it all the time in British gangster films, but not that often in American gangster films.

On swears in general, it really has to do with context and what we have learned to be offended by. For example, my parents always said they were taking the dogs out to take a shit (not a poop, crap, or poopies). So since I've heard it so often in a non-offensive way, I really don't consider it a swear word, although some people really don't like it.

And as a side note, I don't believe that the Japanese have any swear words in their culture.
